Speaker Spotlight: William (Bill) Smith


Bill Smith joined Student Health and Wellness in January 2007 as the health educator. Prior to joining the UMKC staff, he served as a health educator at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS. He has been working in the area of college health education since June 2000 with focus areas in sexual health, alcohol and other drugs, and stress management. He received his Bachelor of Social Work at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas (2000) and his Masters in Management from Baker University in Overland Park, KS (2003). He is a member of the American College Health Association (ACHA) and is the current Region II Representative to the ACHA Board of Directors. Bill serves as the Missouri Member-at-Large on the Central College Health Association Executive Board. He is currently the NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Region IV-W Representative for Veterans Issues. Bill is also the Secretary for College Educators for Veterans in Higher Education, Inc. He is also the staff advisor to the UMKC Student Veterans Organization. Bill is a US Army combat Veteran serving from 1989 – 1992. He was deployed with the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) during Operations Desert Shield & Storm (1990-1991) and is the recipient of The Bronze Star Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal w/3 Bronze Stars, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Army Achievement Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.
