Speaker Spotlight- Sherri Young Theoharidis, Ph.D

Sherri Young Theoharidis, Ph.D

Sherri Theoharidis, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Gladstone, and at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Counseling, Health and Testing Center.  Areas of special interest include body image and eating disorders, issues of abuse/ trauma, self-esteem, women’s issues and identity development. At UMKC, Dr. Theoharidis developed and Chairs the Eating Disorder Treatment Team and conducts individual therapy, clinical supervision, and presentations on campus. Dr. Theoharidis has conducted presentations, seminars and workshops on topics related to positive body image, eating disorders, self- esteem, women’s issues, relationships and trauma. She is currently a contributor to an upcoming Kansas City magazine, My Size Magazine. She has also taught a graduate psychology course at Avila University on Counseling specific to Eating Disorders. In 2010 Dr. Theoharidis was selected to present her teleseminar: Subtitles in Eating Disorder Treatment: The Role of Relationships and Identity that was nationally broadcast through the International Academy of Eating Disorder Professionals. Dr. Theoharidis is a member of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, Academy of Eating Disorders, and the Association for the Development of the Person-Centered Approach. She previously presented her research related to eating disorder relapse at the 2004 International Conference of Eating Disorders.

Speaker Spotlight- Dr. Meagan Leahy

Dr. Leahy received her B.S in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas. She attended Palmer Chiropractic in Davenport, IA and received her Doctorate of Chiropractic degree, graduating with honors, in 2004.

Dr. Leahy's practice philosophy is simple: Health is something that comes from you, not to you. By focusing on good habits in nutrition, exercise, posture, and healthy relationships one can live life to the fullest-Quality of life not just Quantity. She is committed to helping her community become happier and healthier and recently finished her certification in Pediatric and Perinatal Chiropractic to truly help families create wellness from the start.

Speaker Spotlight: Orvie Prewitt



Orvie Prewitt has been involved in health education for 23 years.  She is the Program Coordinator for the Kansas City Regional Arthritis Center (KC RAC) which serves 10 Missouri counties.  The KC RAC is funded by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the State of Missouri.  The KC RAC offers free evidence-based programs in the community to help individuals with chronic conditions to achieve a better quality of life.  She also does contract work as a Project Coordinator for the American Pain Foundation (APF) for fibromyalgia awareness in four states – Missouri, Georgia, Michigan, and New Jersey in addition to volunteering for APF.

Orvie is certified by Stanford University to train leaders and lead the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program on varying conditions, i.e. chronic diseases, arthritis, fibromyalgia, diabetes, etc.   She is also certified by the Arthritis Foundation to train leaders and lead the Arthritis Self-Management Program, Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, and the Walk with Ease Program.

Orvie was appointed in 1994 by Secretary of Health, Dr. Donna Shalala as a Council Member of the National Advisory Allergy and Infectious Diseases Council (NAAIDC), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD.  The NAAIDC is chaired by Dr. Anthony Fauci Director of NIAID.  The term was for four years.  Additionally, she was appointed in 1994 as a Consultant to the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Interagency Coordinating Committee (CFSICC), Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C.  The CFSICC was chaired by Assistant Secretary for Health, Dr. Philip Lee.  The term was for two years.

Orvie also co-founded the National Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Advisory Council (now incorporated as the International Association for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME) as well as the National Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Association, Kansas City, MO (name changed in 1993 to National Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Association).
